I'm mulling over the audio driver for the ThinkPad 760XD a bit.

I actually have a ThinkPad 760XD, and I've got the Intel version of Rhapsody DR2 installed on it.

For the network card, I'm using a 3Com Rhapsody-compatible PCMCIA card. The VGA is compatible with other 760 models so I can get by, but the 760XD uses an MWave MDSP2780 chip for audio—and turns out, there isn't even a driver for it in Linux.

While working on other stuff, it suddenly crossed my mind while mulling things over: if there's no driver, can't we just reverse-engineer and take apart the MS-DOS or Windows 3.1 driver?

Since I already have code secured from working on AC97 and Sound Blaster Live (emu10k1) drivers, Rhapsody DR2 shouldn't be radically different either...

And I actually have prior experience reverse-engineering a Windows 3.1 driver to build a FUSE driver for Linux.

So all of a sudden, I got this feeling that... hey, this might actually be doable. hahaha

It's a bit of a different category since it's a device driver for a SCSI device... but since I've already implemented something similar for OPENSTEP (though limited to the Intel version), I think it's definitely doable.

As always, I'll be tackling it with AI... but when you imagine it, it's fun; when you remember the grueling pain of past struggles, it's a bit bittersweet. :D

Oh nice, and if done right it could also lead to a Linux driver for it.

Yeah... I suppose it's probably possible, but... my 760XD is way too slow to handle Linux lol. hahaha!
