Hey, while I admit there is very little point to learning how to develop OpenStep apps at this point in time. I was wondering if the people in this community were interested in an online class on learning how to get started with Project Builder and Interface Builder to build an OpenStep app.

The skills are transferrable to making Mac and iOS apps... but as its been 30 years since OpenStep was discontinued, if your goal was to make Mac or iOS apps, its better to just learn how to do that.

But anyway, I thought I would inquire if anyone was interested. It would obviously be helpful if you already had development experience in another language like Python or Javascript, but totally not required. Creating a basic calculator app for example can be taught to anyone.

Let me know what you think.

That sounds pretty neat! I've opened up the docs a half dozen times at this point with the intention to read them cover to cover, but I find that crossing the Objective-C language barrier has always been an obstacle. I'm sure there are others in the same boat.

I love objective C. it's such a tiny superset of regular C that it was straight forward for me, but I suspect it depends what world youre coming over from.

I also love Objective C, but even I will admit that before Objective C 2.0 which was around the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion era, can be pretty tough and has a lot of little details you have to get exactly right.

But yeah, asking because I used to teach iOS development classes. So I thought if people were interested here, I could put together a session for OpenStep.

I like the idea very much and would (try to) follow the class.

Lack of time is the issue, but I really like the idea!

That's a yes for me. It would be good if the programming part that Steve Jobs demonstrated with NS3.0 could be recorded and spliced in so that people could understand the power of NS3.0 instead of seeing the blurry screen.  I've been thinking of doing that, one day :D

Following up here. I won't have time to do anything to prepare for this, until after my sister's wedding in October. But perhaps sometimes in November we could do this... I would like to try to find like 10 confirmed people. So if you are interested, let people know about this thread because let's try to scale this out a bit.

If not, I may just put together a guide on how to do this for offline reading.
